Job Description:
The Metadata and Cataloging Librarian is responsible for cataloging Schmidt Library content in all formats to ensure accurate discovery and access using accepted metadata standards. Will take a lead role in possible migration to a new library management system. As a member of a team of librarians, the metadata librarian helps set library policies, serves as liaison to one or more YCP curricular programs, and participates in reference and instruction responsibilities. This Metadata and Catalog librarian collaborates with other librarians and staff to manage the metadata lifecycle for Schmidt Library collections. This position reports to the Library Director in a merged Library and IT organization.
  • Provide expertise and leadership on metadata standards for original and copy cataloging, database maintenance, local digital collections, and physical processing
  • Perform original and copy cataloging for content in a variety of formats using national metadata standards and schema, including MARC21, LCC, LCSH, RDA, FRBR, BIBFRAME
  • Create and maintain holdings data in resource-sharing databases such as OCLC WorldCat
  • Apply quality control to bibliographic and authority records
  • Create, improve, and document policies, workflows, and procedures related to resource description
  • Oversee stacks maintenance
  • Play a key role in future migration to next-generation library services platform
  • Train and supervise student assistants
  • Apply metadata expertise to locally developed digital collections using a wide variety of metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, METS)
  • Maintain knowledge of current and emerging national metadata issues and trends and their implications for local practices
  • Serve as liaison to one or more YCP curricular programs
  • Participate in reference and instruction responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Library Director
Responsibilities:

  • Incorporates new and existing technologies and platforms into cataloging, digital collections, and bibliographic and authority records 20%
  • Maintain knowledge of current and emerging national metadata issues and trends and library services platforms and their implications for local research. 20%
  • Oversees stack maintenance. 10%
  • Provides in-person and online research assistance and instruction. Serves on library and college committees and task forces. Perform other duties as assigned. 10%
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
  • Required: Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an accredited American Library Association graduate program.
  • Preferred: Two (2) or more years’ experience in an academic library setting.
  • Two or more years of experience applying AACR2/RDA, MARC, LCC, and LCSH in an academic library
  • Two or more years of experience cataloging in an integrated library system
  • Two or more years of experience with stack maintenance which may include: physical weeding of the collection, shelving returned library materials, shifting books to make room on shelves
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with the SirsiDynix library management system
  • Experience using MarcEdit and OpenRefine
  • Experience working with ContentDM or other repository system
  • Experience working with authority files
  • Project management experience
  • Knowledge of migrating to a new library system
Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Sufficient mobility and dexterity to move around the Library and retrieve and carry materials from library shelving and cabinets when providing service, including standing, walking, stooping, bending
  • Ability to kneel, lift (up to 35 lbs), reach into deep drawers and high shelves and manual dexterity to pull, handle, and shelve books, journals, oversized materials, software, and a variety of media formats
  • Ability to travel to attend training workshops, meetings, and conferences.
  • Provide assistance in other Library departments when needed to assure high quality user services
