Position Description
Juniata College seeks an experienced, flexible, and innovative academic librarian to join our Statton Learning Commons team as the Special Collections Librarian. As a part of the Statton Learning Commons team, this position will contribute to shaping the Learning Common’s strategic direction, strengthen library services planning and evaluation, and promoting efficient and collaborative workflows across departments, systems, and projects with a focus on meeting the challenges of the 21st century academic library at an evolving and recognized liberal arts college. The Special Collections Librarian will lead the development of a program that is innovative, service oriented and forward-looking. The position will be visible on campus and actively engaged with students, faculty and staff and other members of the Juniata College community. The Special Collections Librarian will oversee a collection of college archives, manuscripts, rare books and ephemera and actively seeks to integrate these collections into the curriculum as part of the library’s information literacy team. In addition, the individual will be responsible for selection and implementation of new technology as appropriate to special collections and archival management.
Responsibilities:
Lead the Special Collections programs; including planning, policies and procedures, acquisition, records, description, processing and preservation.
• Promote and provide curriculum integration support, research assistance and information literacy instruction for students and courses utilizing primary sources, archival and special collections.
• Facilitate discovery and access to collection information through the development of EAD finding aids, the library website and other avenues.
• Plan and oversee digitization and description and access to Juniata College scholarship and historical materials in support of curricular needs.
• Consult with campus offices and departments on identifying and retaining permanent institutional records in accordance with records management procedures.
Coordinate the physical care and policy development of the circulating collection
Manage and maintain college archives
Engage with local and regional historical societies and archives to promote preservation of historical places, objects and documents and to develop educational programs on-site and in the region.
Library liaison to multiple departments, providing targeted library and information literacy support tailored to specific departments – Provides general and virtual information, research and reference services in a variety of formats. Provide research assistance to students and instruction informed by ACRL guidelines for information literacy, create and maintain research guides, tutorials, and other instructional materials, and maintain regular communication with faculty and administrators in assigned departments as a library liaison.

In partnership with the Learning Commons team and campus community develop and implement strategic library initiatives that continuously improve the general collection and archives and special collections within the context of the College’s mission and strategic plan.
• Assists with annual fiscal year budget development related to the general collection and archives and special collection
• Formulates and implements library policies that enable faculty, students, and the larger college community to effectively access the information that supports research, teaching, and learning.
• Work with various constituencies and departments in fund raising and grant opportunities.
• Engage students, faculty, staff, alumni and the local community through creative outreach and advocacy efforts.
• Review, recommend, and implement of an Institutional Repository.
Manage and supervise specialized student employees, student interns and volunteers.
Engages in professional development activities as appropriate to meet personal and departmental goals and objectives.
Engages in pertinent ongoing service, research, scholarship, and/or creative activity as related to functions of job, mission of Library and of Juniata College.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications:
• Master of Library Science or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution.
• At least 3-5 years of experience in an academic library related to management of special collections and college archives.
• Record of collaboration with faculty and students that demonstrate a deep understanding of special collections processes.
• Successful experience with archival or manuscript collections or similar relevant experience
• Knowledge and ability to apply best practices in archival theory, standards and practices
• Demonstrated knowledge of current technological applications to archival management and access
• Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
• Demonstrated interest or documented experience supporting faculty.
• Demonstrated strengths in the identification and use of special collection and archives related technologies
• Ability to leverage assessment for continuous improvement.
• Ability to take initiative, work both independently and collaboratively, handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
• Interest in working in a dynamic environment and a willingness to be flexible and experiment.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with library colleagues and the campus community.
• Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving, time management, and communication skills.
• Evidence of a strong and inclusive user service philosophy.
• Knowledge of strategies to improve open access, increase adoption of open educational resources, and educate others on copyright and intellectual property protocols.

• Ability to quickly learn and apply knowledge to improve procedures and processes.
• Attention to detail and ability to meet scheduling expectations.
• Ability to use absolute discretion when dealing with sensitive, confidential materials; familiarity with FERPA a plus.
