The Cataloging and Systems Librarian is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and enrichment of metadata representing the library’s digital, physical, and virtual collections. The Librarian manages the library’s cataloging and workflows (including quality control of bibliographic records, overseeing training of technical services staff in cataloging standards, and cataloging special collections materials, and original RDA cataloging) as well as maintaining the library’s integrated library system, electronic resources, link resolvers, and search aggregators.

Specifically, you will:

  • In collaboration with respective colleagues, develop, maintain, and document cataloging policies, goals, training materials and procedures for record format specifications, quality control, importing/exporting, batch data processing, and integrating records from multiple sources in bibliographic and non-bibliographic schema
  • Perform original and copy cataloging for library materials in all formats, including books, serials, audio-visual, and digital assets following RDA, FRBR, Library of Congress Classification Schedules and subject headings, and non-MARC metadata related formats (e.g., Dublin Core); compile and analyze annual cataloging statistics.
  • Develop, coordinate, and perform a variety of database maintenance tasks, including automated and batch processing in various information and library systems.
  • Innovate, coordinate, implement, and/or participate in any library projects/initiatives related to electronic resources, metadata, and born-digital/digitized collections; manage the library’s collections electronic resources, such as online indexes, full-text databases, portals, and aggregators of electronic journals, books, and digitized content.
  • Mentor, train and supervise a small and fluid staff including the Cataloging and Metadata Services Specialist, interns, and volunteers.
  • Serve as the library’s liaison to local library consortia, OCLC, and Integrated Library Service vendor.
  • Maintain knowledge of and engage in continuous professional development to keep up with current and developing standards and practices for metadata and cataloging.
  • Collaborate with the department to develop goals, priorities, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Your background and experience include:

  • Prior experience in cataloging, electronic resources, and/or database maintenance experience in a museum or research library environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and implementing special cataloging projects and managing metadata, born-digital and digitized objects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of organizational, descriptive, structural metadata standards and best practices, such as RDA, AACR2, LCC, LCSH, MARC21, FRBR, EAD, XML, CDWA, CCO, Dublin Core, METS, MODS, thesauri, controlled vocabulary, and identity disambiguation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team environment.
  • Strong service orientation and awareness of end user needs as related to cataloging policies and procedures.
  • Project management skills.
  • ALA-accredited Master of Library Science or Information Science degree, or its equivalent in theory, training, and practice.
  • Initiative, optimism, flexibility, and follow through.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience working in special collections or research library preferred.
  • Experience with OCLC WorldCat, OCLC Connexion, Aleph, and Koha preferred.
  • Experience implementing a new integrated library system preferred.
  • Experience with XML, XSLT, OpenRefine, and/or other programming tools that aid in data manipulation preferred.

Position and Compensation Details

  • The salary for this position is $51,000.
  • This position is full-time, exempt, and 35 hours per week.
  • This position reports to Assistant Director of Library and Digital Strategies.
  • Physical requirements:
    • Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
    • Ability to work in small spaces such as the Library stacks and storage areas
    • Ability to move up to 40 pounds
