Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (Rutgers) seeks an experienced and collaborative library leader to join Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) as its inaugural Associate Vice President for Campus Libraries (Associate VP). Reporting to the Vice President for University Libraries and University Librarian (Vice President, or VPUL) and sitting on the Library Leadership Team, the Associate VP will be, after the VPUL, the seniormost leader within RUL and deputy to the Vice President, instrumental in contributing to and executing the vision of the VPUL. The Associate VP will lead the team of Associate University Librarians, act as their champion and advocate, and play the determinative role in knitting together RUL’s activities across the university. This is an opportunity to drive library strategy and operations in a setting with a proud history, dedicated faculty and staff, and an abiding commitment to service.

Rutgers is composed of four distinct chancellor-led units. Rutgers University–New Brunswick, a member of the AAU, is the state land-grant institution and the largest campus, with more than 43,000 students and highly-ranked schools, departments, and doctoral programs. Rutgers University–Newark, with 13,000 students, boasts a diverse urban campus and deep curricular and co-curricular engagement with its city. Rutgers University–Camden serves 7,000 students and is noted for its small class size, focus on civic engagement, experiential learning, and cross-disciplinary doctoral programs. Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), with campuses in Newark, New Brunswick, Piscataway, and Blackwood, is one of the nation’s largest academic health centers and prepares nearly 7,000 students to be physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, and other health professionals.

The Rutgers University Libraries constitute a single university library system that supports faculty, staff, and students, as well as local communities, scholars, students, and researchers across the nation and globally. RUL comprises 11 constituent libraries, the activities of which are enabled by 181 dedicated library personnel (55 library faculty and 126 library staff). RUL is also home to renowned distinctive collections such as the largest and most comprehensive New Jersey history archives, including the historical record of Rutgers University found in Special Collections and University Archives; the Institute of Jazz Studies, the world’s leading jazz archives; and Special Collections in the History of Medicine providing resources in the history of medicine in New Jersey.

The Associate VP will join RUL at a transformational moment. In 2022 Dr. Consuella Askew was named RUL’s Vice President for University Libraries and University Librarian. In concert with RUL faculty and staff, Dr. Askew is launching an exciting new chapter in the history of the libraries. The University’s 21st president, Dr. Jonathan Holloway, assumed office in 2020 and has laid out a series of ambitious initiatives that are grounded in academic excellence and innovation, and which rely on the power of a unified “One Rutgers.” RUL will fuel and support these efforts, particularly with respect to research infrastructure, analytical tools, digitization, and scholarly communications. To achieve maximum impact, the Associate VP will connect the work of chancellor-led unit libraries to each other and across the campuses, elevating their visibility and amplifying their reach and scale.

RUL seeks an adept organizational strategist, a talented manager who builds trust and capacity, and a knowledgeable library professional who understands the activities and requirements of a large, complex, multicampus R1 university. The Associate VP will lead with collaboration, respect and transparency, supporting and empowering the professionals who animate RUL’s work. The Associate VP will also be a skilled communicator with an unwavering and demonstrated commitment to furthering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
